Love me sweet was composed for the occasion of the composer?s wedding in July 2010. The text consists of four verses taken from Elizabeth Barrett Browning?s ironic poem A Man?s Requirements which ends with the couplet, ?I will love thee ? half a year ? As a man is able.? This setting responds to the purer sentiments of the earlier verses, employing a lilting metre, a harmonic idiom and a piquant sprinkling of dissonance.
