A “solo cantata with chorus,” which makes considerable demands on the soloist. Three of the eight movements are for the choir: two carefully and expressively harmonized chorales, and a sonorous and lively movement to the words “Ehre sei Gott in der Höhe.” In the first aria, the ad libitum hightrumpet, played “con _x000D_sordino,” lends a gentle Christmas radiance to the words “O Freudengetöne, wie lieblich, wie schöne.”
