The present edition of Herzlich lieb hab ich dich, o Herr invites us to rediscover one of the most significant cantatas before Johann Sebastian Bach. Ever since the rediscovery of Buxtehude’s cantatas in the second half of the 19th century, the setting of the third verse with its special string tremolo sound effect aroused particular interest. There was mention of “mystical tremors” and of “meditation”. Contemporaries judged the cantata to be a “pinnacle of North German chorale setting”.
