Commissioned by the North Carolina Master Chorale (NCMC) and its music director, Alfred E. Sturgis, this piece received its premiere on December 13, 2016 in Raleigh’s Meymandi Concert Hall at the Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts. The composer wrote both the lyrics and music, which acknowledge the difficulties of our world while finding cause for hope and peace within them. Accordingly, the lyrics play off the themes of darkness and light, and invoke the memories of childlike innocence that are such a part of our holiday traditions. A rare find for school and community concerts: a Christmas carol in which the imagery walks a fine line between secular andsacred and is deeply moving and spiritual nevertheless.
