No matter how devotedly the collecting of folk songs was pursued in the 19th century, there is little basic agreement about what distinguishes a true folk song. There were two opposing schools of thought: those who wanted to include songs in folk style and who instead ruled out popular and bawdy songs, and those who were concerned exclusively with questions of genuine provenance and authenticity. Johannes Brahms regarded the question about the authenticity of folk songs as of secondary importance to their aesthetic quality, and throughout his life stood by the principle of their Romantic use and compositional arrangement.
